Bluebird Trail: A Path to Conservation
Bringing the flash of blue wings back to our skies—one nesting box at a time.
Our volunteer-maintained Bluebird Trail creates safe nesting spots for these beloved native birds while offering visitors the joy of watching conservation success in real-time.

When Houses Are Hard to Find
Eastern Bluebirds were once common throughout Virginia, but their populations plummeted as natural nesting cavities disappeared and introduced species competed for remaining spaces. These brilliant birds, who help control insects and bring color to our landscape, faced a housing crisis that threatened their future in our region.
Building a Bluebird Comeback
Our trail of carefully positioned and regularly monitored nesting boxes provides secure homes where bluebird families can raise their young. Dedicated volunteers check each box weekly during nesting season, tracking egg laying, hatching success, and fledgling counts. These simple wooden structures have become nurseries for new generations of bluebirds—with over dozens of successful fledglings each year! The trail doesn't just support bluebirds; it creates a living classroom where visitors learn about bird conservation and the importance of human stewardship.
Be Part of the Bluebird Family
Our monitoring team welcomes new volunteers who want to experience the thrill of seeing tiny blue eggs, hungry nestlings, and eventually, young bluebirds ready to take flight. Training is provided, and monitoring takes just a few hours each month during nesting season. Can't commit to regular monitoring? Consider sponsoring a nesting box—your donation helps with maintenance, replacements, and educational materials that inspire others to protect these beautiful birds.
